This is how to make Udon! However, these are supposed to be in the opposite order haha. Just pretend!

Last, you boil!
4th you make fun designs with the extra noodles :) (I made a rabbit and a carrot. Ok, fine I'm the only one that did it, but it was fun!)
(3rd, you cut up the noodles carefully to keep them even)
2nd, you roll out the dough and fold it carefully
1st, you step on the dough! Like making wine!

Spring trip to Nasu with other JETs part 1

I went on a trip in the Spring to a place called Nasu. We got to make all sorts of Japanese foods and do special cultural crafts. A very wholesome, interesting trip!

Thailand Part 6

The fruit was SO SO SO good! DELICIOUS! So one night we went to the supermarket and bought a whole bunch of fruit (particularly the stuff we'd never seen before) and had a fruit feast in the hotel! This is papaya. Did you know that's what the inside looked like? We decided that even though the fruit itself is delicious, the inside looks like rabbit poop.
Our fruity spoils. Top left is the peelings and seeds and stuff. Then under that is the papaya. Next to it is a plate of mango and lychee (sp?) The lychee actually had those spiky shells you can see in the trash pile. Really cool!
As a break from the wonderful architecture, this is a main street in Bangkok. Kinda dirty. See the green tent roofs on the left side? That entire row was one huge market! It was really cool. You could buy ANYTHING for super cheap!
Possibly the only good picture I got of those two the whole trip long. Matt and Marienne.

I love love love all the spires and the colors!
This portly gentleman fondly welcomes you into some of the most sacred temple areas of Bangkok. Hehe. He's wearing a tophat!!!
Ok, I really wanted this to be below the picture underneath, but whatever. These are giant Buddha's feet.
This giant Buddha was easily bigger than your average building. He's laying on his side (apparently the pose he died in?) and he's just so....big! They made us take off our shoes to enter the building, and we had to put them in a special shoe rack separate from other Thai people's shoe racks. I guess foreigner's shoes are dirtier?!?

So, from here on out, it's basically gonna be pictures of cool buildings and statues that I saw which was my favorite part! But I have very little commentary to make on them, so enjoy!

These fellas were everywhere built out of every material. I think they were supposed to be some sort of guardians. Pretty cool looking!

You could climb up those stairs. Climbing back down was deadly. I know, I did it.

This was like a temple complex. It was huge, and there were so many buildings! The big one in the center was called the "Temple of the Dawn"

Thailand Part 2

Here is one of the shots of the poor housing district. We took a boat tour along the river, and these just lined the entire river. Most of the people who live in them have a small skiff or some sort of boat and they use it to sell whatever they can at the floating market.
I love the contrast between the new and the old! Sorry I can't keep the camera straight to save my life lol. I was on a boat, it was bumpy!

These were actually hotel verandahs, but they each have their own flowering garden balcony!Isn't that amazing? It is incredible to me that they have deluxe hotels like this and then right next door are the shanties you saw before. Literally...like across the river from each other.

Thailand part 1

Hey guys! Here, at long last, are the Thai pictures. Now on this trip I didn't take many pictures of people, so it's a very different picture set than Korea. Lots of scenery and whatnot. I'll try to keep it from getting boring, but a lot of them are awesome shots, so I'm gonna post them anyway.

This was a Chinese temple that we stumbled across. It was really neat! Apparently they are rarely opened and we happened to be there on a good day. But then again...every place said that lol so it's hard to tell.
This is a really neat view of the skyscrapers in Bangkok. Most of them are probably hotels. There is a distinct difference between the wealthy city center and the poor fringes. Although they are really near each other. I'll be showing some of the shanty/shack areas later on.
This was a park we discovered near our hotel on the first day. Isn't the foliage beautiful? It looks a lot like Florida. Lots of big, leafy plants and palm trees everywhere.
Our very first street vendor meal! The meat was chicken. That darker brown lump on the right side was a chicken liver (we think it was chicken at least...it was definitely a liver!). The broth had a faint taste of maple syrup, but the vegetables were REALLY bitter. It wasn't at all the taste combo I was expecting, but it was delicious! A woman just had a huge pot that she was stirring by the side of the road and she spooned it into bowls for us. It was delicious :)
This is a picture of our hotel room. Isn't it beautiful? It was HUGE. That's matt on the far bed, and the back of Marienne's head lol. They weren't all that keen on me taking their pictures. hence, why most of my shots are scenery.

Ashikaga Scenery

Here are some various scenes from around my apartment and school, just to give you an idea of where I live :)

That building, in the back, is my main base school Minamiko.

There are the rice paddies around Minamiko.

That big white building is my apartment building as seen from the bridge right next to it.

This is the river RIGHT next to my apartment building. If I shifted the camera about two inches to the right, it would be the picture above.
This is the left side of the river bank which is actually a park! Again, if the camera was tilted to the right, you would still see my apartment. I don't know if that helps you visualize it at all, but there it is!

And up next, folks, is Thailand! But it may be a day or two...that was a lost of picture posting for one night!

Spring BBQ 2

This is Akemi. She was basically the organizer of all this goodness. She's awesome! She's also the girl who taught me how to snowboard! She's a lot of fun. She did most of the cooking for us.
This is what a BBQ pit looks like in Japan haha. We had two of them to ourselves. We kept one for meats and one for veggies so the vegetarians among us had food to eat.

So, this if officially my favorite part of Japanese Springtime culture. BBQs! There were so many! Especially the week I was in Thailand there were tons of them! Everyone packs up a bunch of meat and veggies and other snacks, and they all head off to these great park areas for the day. Here's some pictures from the one I went to.

Shaun and Saori are bonding :) Her charms are irresistible! We all carry her around like the princess she is!

A picture of about a third of the group. Everyone is relaxing on a hillside watching everyone else play in the huge amusement complex at the bottom of the hill.
Now, if you were a kid, and your family went to have a BBQ, don't you wish it could be here? We have picture of all the adults trying to get across the water bridge and falling in haha. It wasn't made for adult weight ;) There was even a zipline!

Some friends of Ray and Gary popped in to say hi and they brought their new puppy with them! I think it's a mini poodle. Needless to say it was very popular. Particularly with Audrey! PS, the woman in front of Audrey is her mom, Yumi. Yumi is fantastic. She lived for several years in England and her English is 100% perfect and natural. She's really funny!

Hey everyone! When Spring finally peeks it's way shyly into Japan, it is amid a flurry of cherry blossoms all over the country. And the entire country, accordingly, heads out to celebrate! It's a seasons of picnics and family outings, and lazing away entire days under the cherry trees. They have a specific word for this kind of outing and it only happens this time of the year. This, being my first Hanami, was so amazing and I took over 100 pictures lol. I'll just try to show you all the highlights.

Here is a view of the park we were at. You can see little pockets of friends and families under the trees. Everyone brings big tarps and lots of pot luck foods.

This is the Stou Family. And here's Baby Saori! She is the one who got Mom's hat! Remember? I think I gave you a picture of her wearing it...And here's Saori and me :D She's my special friend. She cries when most people hold her, but she's just fine with me! She does like to pull hair, but what baby doesn't? Whenever I'm around them, I get to hold her for as long as I want!

Korea part 8

Korean BBQ place. Delicious! You grill little bite size pieces of meat on a little grill in the middle of your table and dip it in various sauces. You should all look up Korean BBQ in the US. It's pretty internationally popular.
This is a fermented bean soup that is served at the end of the average meal. Surprisingly yummy!

Hahahaha nothing is more interesting about Asia than its crazy cartoons. This was in a bathroom stall. I think it's telling you how to poop in a happy way. I found it hilarious!

Korea part 7

Hey all! We are approaching the last of the Korea pictures, but not quite there yet. I have to hurry up because I'm about to get home from Thailand, and I have a lot of pictures to upload from here too! Don't worry, there are less pictures from Thailand than from Korea!

We just happened to stumble upon a parade! Acting out the arrival of the queen into the old capital.

A classic Korean Street. I have a few more of these that I will post later.
This woman ushered us into her shop for lunch even though we didn't even realize it was a restaurant! There was no menu, and we had NO idea what it was we were eating, but it was my favorite meal in Korea. And she also loved me :) They are obsessed about my skin color. You see (and I think I've mentioned this before) all of Asia wants to have milky white skin. So while in America I would be considered a ghost, in Asia I'm considered a beauty queen. So throughout the meal, she kept coming over, helping us figure out how to eat it, and then speaking rapidly in Korean and touching my face and stroking my hair with a big smile on her face :O. She was funny, but very friendly. And the food was AWESOME. We have no idea what was in it. We think maybe it had some bone marrow from some animal, various organs, some unidentifiable vegetables, and goodness knows what else' But I really liked it! I think it had a lot of tripe in it. But in soup form, it was delicious. You added the spice yourself (along with some raw shrimp that cooked in the boiling soup), so it wasn't too spicy. Anyway, I found it to be a delightful meal.Here's the meal! Lots of little things that you throw into the soup.

Korea part 6

After the palace, we went to a city called Suwon. It was a walled palace city in the past. The palace structure still stands as well as the wall, and we explored it for half a day. It was pretty neat! Since it looks so old, they often film movies or commercials there and we got to see them rehearsing for a big tai-kwan-do scene! talk about awesome!! A whole bunch of actors. It was fun!

A wax figure of the kind (I think) but it's a pretty neat picture of the traditional dress ( look at the hair!) and living style a couple hundred years ago.

A pretty statue of phoenix who are the symbol of longevity in Korea because they supposedly are reborn in several stages of different egg color over the course of several hundred years.

Hmm. How can I get past this giant padlock?
I'll use my jaws of steel!!! *chomp* Whoops...that didn't work so well...
When in doubt, use modern methods.

Aaaaand the photos continue!

This is our tour guide for the palace. She was so cute! But her accent was very thick, so we quickly got bored of listening to her lecture and started taking funny pictures around the palace grounds haha. You weren't allowed to go into the palace unless you were with a tour guide, and then you were part of an hour and a half tour. So they didn't mind if we wandered around a little bit.

One of the things I loved the most about Korea is the colors. There are beautiful colors EVERYWHERE. Even people's clothing is more colorful. this is a section of the roofing of the palace displaying the awesome colors.

Hey guys! I'll start posting Korea pictures in short installments.

It was an amazing trip, and I wish you all could go!! If you get the chance, take it! It's wonderful!!

This is the entrance gate to a Palace in Seoul. There's no one living in it now, but it was one of 5 palaces that they kept maintained for the royal family in case of fire or other disasters.
I know I know, it's boring, but the flowers were just so beautiful! Right now, everything is starting to bloom in Asia. These are actually Ume (plum) tree blossoms, not sakura (cherry), but they were really pretty, so I took a picture.
These are just random people on the street, but they were so awesome that I had to take a picture! I think it was a wedding party or something like that, but all these little kids were running around in traditional Korean clothing and they were SO cute!
Our first *really* Korean food. Porridge! Mine had crab meat in it and Kristine's was chicken with "oriental vegetables" haha. So, ginger and whatnot . It was delicious! But there was so much, that I couldn't eat it all!

And here is one more snapshot into what I spend quite a bit of time doing, Playing "Rock Band" video game at Joe's house :) Remember when you were trying to talk to me and I was at a friend's house? Yeah, this was probably the same night.

Ok, here are some shots of other things I've been up to. :) A few snapshots into the life of Kim!

I was at a company party with some friends and we decided to take some funny pictures :) This first one is us making silly faces (obviously) followed by a nice(r) one.

Satomi and her family took me apple picking (awhile ago...fall?) and it was so much fun! Look how big and beautiful the apples are!!
It was so invigorating that we had to climb the trees!!

And no visit to an orchard is complete without hiding behind a scarecrow!

Here's a few cultural pictures for you!The first in a series of festival food pictures. It's not your average funnel cakes and hot dogs ;). Here we have steak on a stick! Grilled to gourmet perfection! Oh, and if you look carefully, you can find me in the corner!
This is one of my personal favorites. It's called Yakisoba. It's a bunch of fried noodles with vegetables and egg. The one we see here is fried pancake style. It's Mmm Mmm good! I often make this dish by myself in my apartment.
I don't know if you all remember, but I went on an ill-fated hike a while back? Here's a picture of the view at one of the peaks. Amazing, huh?
There is a famous flower park in our city that puts up massive amounts of light displays in the winter season. This is another ALT from the neighbouring town posing under the canopy of blue dangling lights.
This is just the entrance to the park. It really was huge. It took me about two hours to walk through it all!

Since I'm in such a picture-posting mood ;) Here's a few from the trip I took to Kamakura with Zishan yesterday. It was the capital of Japan a REALLY long time ago and it has the world's biggest Buddha statue, among multiple other shrines and temples. They happened to be having a fantastic festival while we were there, and here's the results!I started out the trip with some serious contemplation.....of how on earth I was going to get the dust from my shoes out of my jeans...
Then along the way, we ran into a girl all dressed up in festival attire so we just HAD to stop her to get her picture. Z just thought she was pretty, but her boyfriend wouldn't let us take a picture unless we all got in it together like a tourism shot haha! I don't blame him! This kind of outfit is very common at festivals, although hers is particularly beautiful. We completely made her day, though. She had a huge grin on her face as she walked away.
Seriously, what are the odds of finding this in Japan?!?!?!?
Make a wish! Or a thousand! And write it on a piece of paper and tie it to a string!

A continuation of the last post.

Mitsuo took us all to a trip to historic Nikko. A very old city with many temples that is famous for its waterfalls. Here we had hiked to a platform high in the mountains to see a waterfall and we took a commemorative picture. I think the leaves are beautiful! Excuse Mitsuo's face. He always gets goofy in front of the camera lol.

I borrowed one friend's coat and another friend's hat and I absolutely love how the picture turned out :) Narcissism at its best!

Ok, I only put this up here for you to get a vague idea of what karaoke consists of in Japan. As you can see, we are in a little room by ourselves with sofas that go around the room and a small table in the middle. There are two microphones, and you can't see, but there's a little TV in the corner. That's myself, Mitsuo, a very pregnant Aya (who has since given birth to Saori) and Joe.

OK everyone. You all want pictures. I don't have a whole lot of time to mess about, but here are a few. I picked all ones that have me in them so that Mom can be happy :). I also tried to get pictures of my friends so that you can have an idea of who I'm hanging out with. If I have time later, maybe I'll upload some less-narcissistic ones!

This is a big group shot. This is almost all the people that I see on a regular basis. As you can see, we are at the local bowling alley, and have gathered for a very RARE group shot. Starting from Back Left: Joe-Comes from Springfield, Illinois; Zishan-Comes from England; Clarence-Springfield Illionois; Shaun-Originally South Africa, but last 8 years in Iowa; John-America. Bottom Left: Kevin-Canada; Satomi-Japan (very good friend of mine); Miki-Japan, Satomi's friend. Oh yeah. And I'm poking my head up in the middle :)

This is a street very near my house. Zishan and I discovered a brand new bakery and are VERY excited about it because it makes real sandwiches!! You get to see my bike, and have a small idea of where I live.

Ok, Excuse my crazy face, but Zishan was threatening to put gum in my hair! As before left to right, that's Zishan, Clarence, a Japanese girl we met in Tokyo...I think her name was Yuki? and Myself.

This is the only picture I have of the new baby to date, though I'm hoping to get new ones from friends soon. You can see the mom, Aya all in Pink, the Dad Mitsuo, who you will see in later photos and the rest of us crooning over Baby Saori.

haha. Well, I started this for my LAST trip to Japan, but I guess it can serve it's purpose for this trip as well.

This is my pre-departure hello and introduction the the blog. I will be getting on the plane to Tokyo Saturday morning and from there my adventures begin! I will attempt to keep this updated often with anecdotes and musings so that you all can be a part of my journey as well.
